Welcome to the US. Elect a Black President. Shoot a real machine gun. What!?

Hi All,

It's been awhile I know.  I apologize.  Sometimes I have so much to say but no time to write and then I have the time but nothing to write about.  This is the latter.  So forgive the format, I'll just blurb some stuff and maybe as I write I'll be inspired to expand.  Here goes:

Just an aside, last weekend we went to Las Vegas for a Cheerleading competition with Adri's friend from high-school.  It was cool, we stayed in a hotel and we were flown in and out.  I put some pictures of the view from the hotel room in the morning and an ad (I kid you not, a real ad) at the airport.  I'm sorry what!?  That ad is so many levels of wrong!  Shoot a real machine gun?  At who?  Why?  Welcome to the US of A folks!  What a shocker!  Ok, on with the blog.

First off Obama What!!!???  It's so cool to have a new President in the White House.  It's so cool to have a President who can speak in whole sentences.  I know he's not perfect, but he's so inspiring.  It's so refreshing to hear thoughts and ideas and not just rhetoric.  I'm excited to see policies developed on the knowledge that the world is not black and white but very grey.  I never believe politicians when they say they want to usher in a new kind of politics.  They all say that to get elected.  Clinton said it.  Bush said it.  Reagan said it.  But I believe Obama when he says it.  I don't like to hear people say that he's going to "Save us all!"  He won't.  He can't.  That's not his job.  But he can and will encourage us and inspire us to save ourselves; to take responsibility for our lives, for our countries, for our planet, for Humanity.  I hope everyone knows by now that he's not a radical, he's not a terrorist and he's not Muslim, although it shouldn't matter if he was (Muslim, not terrorist).  I really feel like it's a new era, and I'm stoked.

Two weeks ago I worked on a Web-Series as a DoP.  It was great!  For those who don't know, a web series is like a TV series, except that often the episodes (or webisodes) are shorter (approx. 3min in this case) and the budget is tiny.  This series is called Actor Diaries and chronicles the trials and tribulations of a young woman who recently moved to Hollywood to pursue her dreams of working as an actress.  The episodes are semi-biographical, in that they are based on an amalgamation of the experiences of the series creator/writer/director/editor/lead actress Kate Vandevender.  It's really well-written and funny and a pleasure to work on.  As soon as the episodes are edited and posted on the Web I'll send the link out to y'all.

I've been stressed about money recently (no you haven't read this post before).  But the stress has brought new realizations:
1- I am rich and taken-care of.  Every time I really need money (rent, food, etc.), it's always there.  I am supported by so many people (parents, in-laws, friends) that it fills me with joy.  Nichiren Daishonin said that "Even a strong person can fall if the path is uneven, but a frail person will always stand if he is supported by many people."  (That's not the exact quote, but that's the gist.)  My goal is to be a strong person who is supported.
2- More money will not take the stress away.  If I don't change the part of me that stresses out, the part that needs to stress, I will always get stressed out no matter how much money I have.  If I had a million dollars right now, I probably wouldn't be able to handle it and it would cause me great stress.  It would be the same, only the object and the size of the stress would change.  And since my ultimate goal is World Peace, it is more important for me to be happy than rich.  I will grow happy through my struggles, overcoming obstacles.  As Adrianne said to me, my goal is to be happy and rich; to be the type of couple that people look at and say "You wouldn't know it, but they're loaded!"
3- I don't need money to be happy.  As Adrianne said in a previous post, I am the happiest I've ever been and I don't have any money, so...

It's kind of a bummer about the Eagles losing the NFC championship game, especially since they weren't outplayed but rather shot themselves in the foot on numerous occasions.  I just hope the Super Bowl will be an exciting game.  This will be my first SB ever in the US!  I'll get to see all the great commercials live, not the next day!  How exciting.  I'm going to a friend's house for the game and I'd like to make some chili.  Anybody got a good recipe?  Just send it to danielthemaniel2@hotmail.com.

The only other thing I have to say sports-wise is Go Habs Go!  The Canadiens win the Cup in '09!  I've been saying it for 4 years now (Cup in '09) and I still believe it'll happen.  You heard it here first folks.

It's actually raining here today, which I love!  It allows me to play music I don't normally listen to because it doesn't fit with sun: Chet Baker, Blossom Dearie, The Be Good Tanyas and James' new band Young Galaxy.  I like L.A. a little more every day.  I'm starting to see beauty in the ugliness.  I really love our neighborhood and our friends.  We're very fortunate to be where we are.  We discovered the best bar the other night.  It's very clean, but dark and woody.  They have 40 (yes 40) beers on tap!  It's a 5 minute walk from our place.  What!?

Anyway, that's all for now.  I hope that wasn't too rambling.  I have a few possible projects for the future so I'll talk about those in the next post.

Oh, one last thing.  I'd like to congratulate my good friend from high-school (the only one I've kept in touch with) Jean-Francois Morin and his girlfriend Christine Leclerc on the birth of their beautiful baby daughter Florence Morin.  I'm sure you will both make great parents and I can't wait to meet the new arrival into our world.

As Ross Porter used to say, "Stay cool, Keep warm, and for Goodness Sake, Take good care of the ones you love!"

Peace, (for real)

Dan
